UPI Goes Credit: Google Pay and Axis Bank Introduce Flex Credit Card

Published on

Axis Bank has partnered with Google Pay to launch the Flex Credit Card, a product that blends credit card functionality with everyday UPI-style payments. The card can be used directly within the Google Pay app for both offline merchant payments and online transactions. Instead of conventional reward points, users earn Stars, where 1 Star equals ₹1.

The card is offered as lifetime free, making it an accessible and low-cost option for frequent Google Pay and UPI users.

Reward Structure Simplified

In the month of card issuance, users earn 2 Stars for every ₹500 spent (effective reward rate of 0.4%). All eligible spends during the month are aggregated, regardless of the number of transactions or usage mode, and rewards are calculated at the account level.

From the following month onward, cardholders continue to earn 2 Stars per ₹500 spent (0.4%), provided the card was used at least once in the previous month. If there is no activity in a month, reward accrual is paused.

While the Google Pay Axis Flex Credit Card comes with multiple reward tiers—such as 1X, 2X, 4X, and 8X Stars—along with a welcome benefit of a ₹250 gift card and 250 Stars on the Google Pay app, the overall reward framework can be a bit complex to grasp initially.

At present, the card appears best suited for regular and high spenders, who are more likely to unlock its full reward potential.
